Most lamps emit light in only a narrow band of the visual spectrum (incandescents mainly red, normal fluorescent has the green-yellow part of the spectrum). Studies have shown that people exposed to prolonged periods of fluorescent lighting have a higher rate of "cortisol" a hormone produced by the body and increases during stress. The color frequencies of blue and red are vital to health. On average we spend 90% of our time indoors under artificial lighting therefore, light quality becomes critical. Full spectrum lighting fights the "cabin fever" effect and even improve heart rate, oxygen intake and blood pressure. Colors appear real, like outdoors. Full spectrum lights reduce the glare that causes eyestrain, headaches, and stress. When daylight enters our eyes, it reaches the pineal gland (also known as the seat of the soul or the third eye) and activates our Endocrine system which is connected to our immune and nervous systems. The pineal gland reduces the production of the light sensitive hormone, melatonin from 100% in the night to 10% during the day. The balance of melatonin has been proven to be a crucial element in many health related studies and has been linked to estrogen production, and many cancer related diseases. People having difficulty sleeping may have decreased melatonin levels which can be greatly improved with exposure to natural or full spectrum lighting. Since daylight triggers the body to stop producing melatonin - the body's natural sleep aid, it is important to have a source of natural or full spectrum lighting to stop the production of this hormone. Otherwise you may feel "groggy" in the morning because the melatonin has not received a signal to shut-off!. Stimulating proper production of melatonin from the pineal glad is paramount to good health. Photo biologists state, "exposure to Full-Spectrum light has an important influence on the endocrine system and can reduce the risks of many diseases, including cancer." These studies have shown that the retina can, when stimulated by the proper wave lengths of light, synthesize melatonin directly to the pineal gland. Malillumination can prohibit proper secretion of melatonin. So light of a proper type and intensity can be considered a nutrient. It is highly recommended to replace antiquated fluorescent lights with full spectrum lights, it is simply a matter of health.

About Full-Spectrum Lighting The term "full-spectrum" lighting is used to define a light source which has a phosphor added enabling it to closely simulate natural outdoor lighting by replicating as nearly as possible the spectral curve produced by the Sun. Therefore this type of light carries a "balanced" spectrum (colors you see in a rainbow). Because natural light renders colors perfectly, it is assigned a "Color Rendering Index" (CRI) OF 100. This has become the reference standard for all high color rendering lamps. In order for artificial lighting to be considered for therapeutic value, it must fall within the 90% range. Full Spectrum lights do not have any harmful UV rays, unlike tanning beds which radiate large quantities of UV. Numerous experiments have proved that full-spectrum lights can improve health and performance and decrease conditions such as headaches, depression, and fatigue. Implications of full-spectrum lighting become increasingly important as people spend more time indoors. Most artificial lighting emits light in only a narrow band of the visual spectrum, and due to these deficiencies in certain colors, it creates an unbalanced spectral distribution or malillumination. Cool white (non-full-spectrum) tubes are deficient in the red and the blue-violet ends of the visible spectrum and these are necessary for health. Studies conducted have reported higher levels of the stress hormones ACTH (adrenocorticotrophic hormone) and cortisol in subjects exposed to cool-white lighting. Most fluorescent lights only hold a CRI of 68 to 75% because they are primarily in the yellow-green range. This range of the spectral curve is where our eyes are the MOST sensitive, and as a result we experience "headaches, eyestrain and irritability". Cool white fluorescents carry a Kelvin temperature of 4200 º K. This poor distribution causes distortion of colors, stresses our eyes, creating a very unpleasant atmosphere. It is a DRAIN on our immune system and why many people feel "drained" by the end of the day from working under these lights Regular incandescent bulbs are in the 40% range and emit heavily on the red end of the spectrum.Kelvin temperature indicates the warmth of the light. Natural daylight holds a color temperature of 5000 - 6500 º Kelvin. Artificial light is assigned a Kelvin temperature which is determined by the CRI distribution. In achieving as close to this temperature as possible, it is more closely simulating natural outdoor light.deStress Stop carries a variety of Full-Spectrum lighting in "fluorescent style" tubes, 18", 24", 36" and 48" (standard in many buildings) as well as screw-in fluorescents which fit in any ceiling, wall or lamp fixture but you do not put a shade over these – for maximum therapeutic benefit – leave them exposed. The tubes are available in either T8 or T12’s (wider than T8’s). We also carry full spectrum in "incandescent bulbs" 60 – 150w and 3-way. The terms fluorescent and incandescent are generic terms used to describe the style of lamp only. deStress Stop carries Full Spectrum fluorescent lamp which has a unique blend of phosphors to achieve the highest color rendering index available on the market today. 96 C.R.I. With a color temperature of 5000 º which can be compared to outdoor lighting at noon time, the time of day where the blue and red parts of the spectrum are present in equal amounts. This light carries a near UV rays for health benefits. Energy consumption of 40 watts with an average life of 20,000 hours. We have addressed the quality of our water and the quality of our air now it is time to address the quality of our light! Times are changing as we spend more time indoors, light and the quality of it can no longer be ignored. The bottom line is prolonged exposure to regular fluorescent lights weakens the immune system, that’s the bottom line.
